More Guy Pearce
Though a very stellar performance, Guy Pearce’s leading role as Jimmy Starks in first snow is just one of many acclaimed appearances Pearce has made throughout his career long body of work. At age 43, Pearce has already delivered audiences a wide variety of memorable cinematic moments and storylines, acting since his first small-screen break in the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, back in 1986.Though Neighbours was the first TV show to give Pearce any sort of serious exposure, it was far from Pearce’s first foray into the wide world of acting. Throughout his youth in Geelong, Austrailia, where he moved from Cambridgeshire, England at the young age of 3, Pearce appeared in a number of theater productions. He studied in preparatory school at the prestigious Geelong College (a secondary education school, not a college as American connotations might infer) where he was a member of the GSODA Junior Players, one of the premiere non professional theater companies in the country. After 105 episodes on the Australian show, director Frank Howson helped Pearce transfer his talents to the big screen. Pearce’s first 3 movies, Friday on my Mind (1990), Heaven Tonight (1990) and Hunting (1991), were all Howson films. Hunting, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival with Pearce on hand, helped to up the actor’s presence within the industry.By most standards, Pearce’s breakthrough performance didn’t come until 1994, when he starred in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, an Australian film that attracted audiences from across the globe, including Great Britain and the United States, winning an Oscar for Best Costume Design and nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture Comedy or Musical. Another major step came alongside fellow Australian actor Russell Crowe in the 1997 crime story LA Confidential, also featuring a who’s-who of celebrated actors, including Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell and Danny DeVito. Perhaps still Pearce’s most famous role to date came in 2000, with the release of psychological thriller Memento, one of the most highly reviewed films of its decade. Perhaps ironic in that Pearce has been happily married to Kate Mestitz, a psychologist, since March of 1997.Following Memento, Pearce appeared in more Australian films, including The Hard Word (2002) and The Proposition (2005) among a host of US-made flicks, before starring in First Snow in 2006, a year he would also play Andy Warhol in Factory Girl.Since First Snow, Pearce had a minor role in 2009 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker, though at the risk of spoiling the movie for extreme Pearce fans, don’t get too attached to his character in the early going. His full filmography is too long to list specifically, though for more than two decades Pearce has entertained audiences across a variety of genres in roles big and small.
